Halloween Movie Self-Care: The Spooky Movie I Watch for Comfort

A case for cinematic comfort blankets and nostalgic self-care.

Hello, friends! It feels good to be back here writing again after a few weeks away. I had a hectic few weeks, but I’m happy to be back!

The world has shifted so quickly as we head into the final stretch of October, and with all the seasonal energy — the costumes, busy fall events, and looming pressure of the holidays — I find myself craving something soft and cozy to relax me. And while “Halloween movie” and “self-care” probably don’t seem like things that should go together, for me, they do. Because when life gets busy, I don’t seek out fear (I’m not a masochist!). I seek out comfort and nostalgia.

And my biggest confession? My favorite Halloween movie is Halloweentown.

I know, it’s not a masterpiece of cinema, but that is precisely the point. It’s an early 2000s classic that is all magic and zero genuine dread. Also, it’s the perfect cinematic comfort blanket. Set in a world where most monsters are friendly, magic is real, and it all ends with a lesson about embracing your true self and the importance of family, it’s true Disney magic. The plot is simple, the clothes are wonderfully dated, and it requires nothing of me except to sit down and be charmed. As a bonus, it’s also one of my husband’s favorites, so it’s always on our Halloween movie marathon lineup! This is my version of a spooky-themed self-care ritual. It’s not about maximizing aesthetics; it’s about minimizing stress.

Here’s how my ritual goes:

  1. The Comfies: Immediately change into the softest pajamas I own. While I work from home, I try to be mostly presentable during the day, but pre-movie, it’s always a warm shower and my comfy pjs time.
  2. The Beverage: A giant mug of hot chocolate (extra marshmallows) or my favorite tea. No wine, no pressure — just something warm to hold.
  3. The Snacks: Something salty and something sweet. For us, it’s usually popcorn and those Pillsbury cookies with the Halloween drawings on them. Again, all about comfort, not going overboard.
  4. The Lights: All main overhead lights go off. Only the under-cabinet lights in the kitchen are allowed.
  5. The Surrender: Phone goes into another room. This hour and a half is purely for getting lost in the gentle chaos of Marnie Piper and Grandma Aggie Cromwell.

These micro-moments of choosing comfort over chaos are what get me through the busiest seasons. It reminds me that I’m allowed to opt for the low-stakes magic and the sweet, simple nostalgia.

If you’re also feeling the weight of the week today, I encourage you to hit pause. Try starting your own Halloween movie self-care ritual. Maybe it’s also Halloweentown, or Hocus Pocus, or something else. The point is to let the big, complicated world fade for a moment and choose the gentle magic instead.

You deserve that kind of comfort today.
