How our Sedona trip inspired a new postcard tradition!
Last week, my husband and I took a much-needed trip to Sedona, AZ. It’s one of my favorite places in the world, and I was thrilled to bring him back for more than one night, finally. This time, he got to really experience Sedona and its vortexes. And on what was already a great trip, a new vacation tradition was born.
I love postcards, so I knew I wanted to send some while we were away. One day while my husband golfed, I decided to get some stamps and postcards, and treat myself to a cute iced latte while I sent them to some friends and family.
It turned out that I had gotten one too many stamps, and I didn’t want to waste it. So, I decided to get one more postcard – but I couldn’t decide who to send it to. Then, I had an idea.
The Tradition
I think that everyone has experienced the letdown of coming back from vacation. You’re back to work, chores, and all of your “real-life” responsibilities. I’ve been there, too. And I knew that the last day of vacation scares would come. I was thinking about how my husband and I were having such a great time on our trip. We felt so much more relaxed and less stressed on our trip. I wanted to bring that feeling back home… but that’s easier said than done. So, what if “vacation” us sent “real-life” us a postcard? And that’s what we did.
We picked out a postcard together, and then wrote ourselves a little note. It said to remember how much fun we had and to try to bring the vacation vibes back into our everyday life. Sure, we wouldn’t be surrounded by the vortexes of Sedona once we were back home, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy life, feel connected to ourselves, and one another. Life shouldn’t get in the way of simple things like that. So if a little vacation tradition can help with that, why not?
After writing our postcard, we waited until our last night to drop it in a mailbox. This way, we could be back home for a few days before it arrived. Then, we’ll really be back in the everyday routine before we get that little reminder!
This is just a simple vacation tradition that you and your partner can adopt. It may seem small, but not only will you get that little reminder of how good your vacation felt while away, but over the years, you’ll have a collection of postcards to summarize all of your travel memories together. It’s also an inexpensive souvenir! I also love to think about how this can evolve – from babymoons to family vacations. I can’t wait to see the places we go and the messages we write to ourselves back home.
This is our first time doing this tradition, so I can’t speak to how well it works just yet. Best case, we get a little surge of vacation vibes to pep up our everyday, and worst case, we get a pretty postcard to hang on the fridge for a bit!
